Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory located at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, it has an area of 6.7 km2 (2.6 sq mi) and is bordered to the north by Spain.
Gibraltar has become quite a fascinating destination for expats to explore due to its unique location and political situation. For the expat who is looking to go to work and reside in a country that accepts most major European currencies, Gibraltar makes more an interesting choice due to its nature to be easily liveable for Europeans. Another aspect of “living” in Gibraltar that is unique is that many expats commute there daily by crossing the border from Spain.
As a British territory, English is the official language of Gibraltar. However, with Spain right across the border, there is plenty of Spanish spoken as well. There is even a local language unique to Gibraltar called Llanito, which is a combination of English, Spanish, Maltese, Portuguese, and even some Italian mixed in, with a population of about 33,000 people, has the 5th highest density of any country or territory in the world!
The law of Gibraltar is based on English law, but is separate from the UK legal system. Non-resident businesses do not pay income tax unless the source of this income is Gibraltar proper. There is no tax on capital income. In Gibraltar there is no capital gains tax, wealth tax, sales tax or value added tax.
Although present day taxes have increased, many big players in the gambling industry still call Gibraltar home, and it remains a large part of the economy. For this there is a very strong iGaming industry, the 20 or more online betting and gaming companies licensed or based in Gibraltar employ 3,000 people!
The Rock of Gibraltar, also known as the Pillars of Hercules or The Rock, is a 426 meter high monolithic limestone, is one of the most well-known place of Gibraltar. The rock can be seen for many miles. It is home to the Barbary Apes, a type of tail-less macaque which are the only wild monkeys in Europe and they can be seen in their natural habitat.
